i-D's Female Gaze Issue

Who run the World? Girls. (Of course we do).

i-D  is bringing a celebration of the visionary women shaping the fashion industry, this month, and I couldn't be more excited about it.

Starring British model and activist Adwoa Aboah (babe) and shot solely by female photographers, the issue is raw, honestly and beautifully shot and edited.

So it's never been a better time to be a woman. Arguable, but true in many cases when it comes to the fashion industry. There certainly is growing opportunities for young creative female photographers, models, actresses and directors in the industry. Exciting times for sure. I love how this issue celebrates that, with interviews with over 28 female designers and 22 models about their life experiences, lessons to learn and inspiration.

Plus, I'm crazy about the issues cover star and collaborator, Adwoa Aboah.

The 24-year old British born model and actress is the founder of Gurls Talk; the feminist initiative speaking out on addiction, sexuality, body image and mental health to encourage girls to talk. Aboah is so brilliantly multi-faceted and I love how the lens of Ines van Lansweerde and Harley Weir capture her mesmerising appearance, the vision of modern womanhood in all it's raw beauty.

Make this issue a must-read!

Kendall Jenner's Vogue Domination

Kendall Jenner has finally graced the cover of the most important Vogue issue of the year, the September issue- and people are hating it.

It's true that the young model and reality TV star hasn't been missing from the pages of the notorious fashion magazine for the last 2 years at least. But it seems her presence gracing the cover of the most laboured over issue of the year has not been welcomed very well in the fashion world.

The overall tone of the distaste towards the Kendall cover is the fact that many critics regard her as being simply famous for being famous.

Many have heralded this cover as the 'end of fashion'. But are critics stuck in the past? I mean, what is the significance of a reality TV star gracing the cover if she has truthfully become an icon in her own right.

When looking further into critics of Kendall Jenner's career, it has been apparent that every successful move she's made regarding her presence on the world's biggest catwalks and in the pages of the dominating fashion publications, have been ridiculed and undermined.

It is true, that likely, without the fuel of her family's fame she may not have gotten to the position that she is in today. But that is a big 'what if?'

Do critics really need to re-evaluate the future of the industry they critique over?

We live in an age of social media stars, influencers, designers cross models, and reality TV stars shaping the trends and fashions of the moment.

It is without a doubt that Kendall Jenner is one of the most powerful influencers and models of the moment regardless of whether some believe she should be in that position or not.

What do you think?

Kendall has just secured herself another front cover, this time for Vogue Japan.

World domination imminent? I think so.

The Success of Nostalgia: Urban Outfitters

Urban Outfitters recent throwback collaborations with brands such as Wrangler, Adidas and Calvin Klein are helping to win back their customers, according to statistics.

Yes, it seems as millenials (18-28 y.o.), we all love a bit of nostalgia.

Urban Outfitters, Inc. has seen an overall revenue increase of 3% over the same time last year to $891 million in the US.

So what's caused this?

Well, less markdowns and sales have improved UO's brand image for one. Secondly, due to exclusive partnerships with other brands, UO has seen more of it's core customers, particularly women, purchasing products at full price.

The retailer's key strategy is an interesting one which is taking advantage of the massive nostalgia trend that is currently dominating fashion, fuelled by competitors such as ASOS and smaller exclusive online retailers. This seems to be appealing to shoppers that may even be said to be a little too young to really feel nostalgic about the brands they are donning. Particularly, UO collaboration with Calvin Klein has been successful. 90's-tinged and heavy on the logo, Klein has become appealing to a much younger audience by being associated with Urban Outfitters. Adidas Originals and Fila have also been particularly successful, with a distinctly 70's/80's feel to their collections.

Model Of The Moment: Damaris Goddrie

Hello all and happy Wednesday to you! I hope the first week of August treated you well. Today, I wanted to talk about one of the biggest up and coming models of 2016 that I am forever swooning over, Damaris Goddrie.

I am obsessed with her edgy look and the style of editorials she has been pictured in recently, she hasn't been out of the pages of Vogue (or off the runway) for the last six months its seems...

Dutch-born Damaris was scouted two years ago in Antwerp at the age of 16 (yes, she is only 19) with her first big job being modelling for JW Andersen's pre-fall 2015 look book.

Since then she has graced the catwalks for Marc Jacobs, DKNY and Michael Kors amongst others.

With her wild curls, flawless caramel complexion and beautifully youthful features, Damaris has seduced the fashion world. She is in many ways, welcoming in a new age in fashion (at last) where diversity is being embraced both on the catwalks and in editorials, without having to be overtly addressed.

"Some of the hottest girls right now are mixed race. I feel so excited that the catwalk has embraced diversity"

-Damaris Goddrie

Here are a few of my favourite recent editiorial shoots of Damaris...
